Commonwealth Mastering

An independent mastering studio, based in Dallas, TX.

Why I'm Here

Sound is an amazing thing, isn’t it? It’s one of the most important mediums in which we experience our existence, and yet, it’s easy to overlook what it is that makes it speak to us. A lot of the things you’ve heard that made you feel something didn’t happen by accident. Someone took the time to craft that sound into what it ultimately became.

Mastering is the combination of science and art. It’s hearing something for the first time and being authoritative, creative, and yet objective about where it should or could go. It’s feeling, it’s envisioning, and it’s impulsive – often all at once. Without skilled mastering, there is a disconnect between the artist’s intention and the listener’s experience. Less philosophically speaking, it’s not only about making the audio sound as great as it possibly can, on as many mediums as it possibly can, but also about ensuring that it will deliver an exceptional experience for both the listener and creator alike in perpetuity.

My reason for doing this is simple – to give back what the gift of sound has given to me. Your work is my work, and that means that whatever it takes to make it sound like you want it to, I will do.

What I Offer

I offer clear, professional, and consumer-ready mastering for your music and audio productions, meaning that I take exquisite care to ensure that your project is set for for distribution and release, not just sonically, but also with the accompanying metadata. When your project leaves Commonwealth, it is ready to go out into the world.

In addition, I also specialize in noise reduction, audio editing, and audio restoration for other content mediums, such as podcasts, audiobooks, or archival recordings.

With every single new client, I start at the same place – with a free, brief (30 minute), and personalized consultation to talk about your project and what it requires. In this conversation, I don’t want it to feel like you’re bargaining with a used car dealer for the right deal or with your buddy for the hook-up, but rather with a future partner and creative confidant in your audio-related goals.

Not sure if your mix is ready for mastering? I also offer mix consultations (at an hourly rate). What this means is that you submit your file(s) to me, I listen to them and make detailed notes on what could be improved or how the mix could be shaped, and then from there, schedule a call or video chat to discuss it. Helping you create great music isn’t just about the master, and so helping create the best possible mix is also my goal.

You’ll no doubt come with questions, concerns, and possibly even reservations – I intend to quell all of those with my commitment to creating a symbiotic game-plan with clearly defined expectations. I want you to feel from the jump that you’re listened to and that your work is what I’m here for, because it is.

Do yourself a favor and use Austin of Commonwealth Mastering to put the finishing touches on your song, he will deliver on all levels. I recently produced, recorded and mixed a full length record for one a band I play for. I put a lot of work into getting the mix where I wanted it to be but it needed another person’s ears on to get it to the finish line. A real advantage of working with Austin is the insight and communication he provides. He gave suggestions of adjustments I could make to the mix to help the masters translate even better. They would not have turned out as good as I they did otherwise. He did an amazing job. I highly recommend!

Great experience with a track I had mastered here. Did an A / B against a Landr master and Austin's master blew it out of the water. He also went ahead and did a 2nd master after I had a small revision with the original mix. Can't recommend enough.

Advocacy

Cultivating and offering a completely inclusive and welcoming environment is paramount to what I do and who I am, so much so that it’s something I want to state right up front. I embrace diversity and community and want to foster a working relationship with everyone of all backgrounds. Being part of the music community is more than just the music we make together and where it comes from, it’s also what we do with it. Artists, engineers, management, and many others all have a direct role in how we shape the industry going forward. I’m on a mission to be a part of a bigger conversation about how to support each other in the world, and I hope you’ll join me for it. These are some of the organizations involved that I support:
